How I Started My Broiler Farming Journey
To begin my broiler farming venture, I first selected a land location that was ideal for poultry operations — a site with an unlimited water supply and no nearby residential community for biosecurity and disturbance control. I then constructed a raised poultry coop, elevated at least one foot from the ground to improve hygiene and airflow. Since proper ventilation is essential for chick health, I designed the shed with a minimum sidewall height of 9 feet and a central roof height of 13 feet to prevent heat accumulation, especially because it is an open-farm structure. To further control temperature, water sprinklers were installed on top of the roof to minimize heat stress. Additionally, I developed cost-effective automatic drinkers using PVC pipes, ensuring a continuous and hygienic water supply for the birds.
How We Built Our Automatic Broiler Drinker System
To reduce labor and ensure a continuous clean water supply for the birds, we designed and built our own automatic drinker system. We started with a 20-foot, 4-inch PVC pipe mounted securely on a 20-foot wooden log (2×4 inch). To keep the pipe straight and stable along the full length, we performed quarter-pipe cuts every 3 feet, allowing the water line to remain aligned and balanced.
A mini floater was installed inside the pipe to maintain a consistent water level of approximately 2 inches. To prevent wastewater buildup, we added an overflow outlet that drains used water from the system daily, ensuring better hygiene and cleaner drinking conditions.
To support the pipe and log firmly, we cut customized holders out of galvanized iron sheets using a plasma cutter for a precise fit, then mounted them to the coop structure. The overall installation is simple but requires proper planning, accurate cutting, and firm alignment for long-term efficiency and durability.
